How do you know which contractors are providing you with the best, more accurate and truthful information about your system? There are a couple of ways for you to know if the proposals you're getting are providing you with the best value for the best price. First - did the contractor measure your house, create a floor plan and perform a load calculation. If they didn't then they don't know what size equipment to install. Most systems are 50-100% oversized. This can cause operating problems and comfort issues in your home. Insist that the contractor show you their Manual J or equivalent load calculation. Second - are they members of a national contracting association. Companies who commit the time and resources to participate in national associations are usually working harder to train their staff and be current with the latest technologies, industry issues, and home and business owner concerns. Ask if they participate or are members of any national organizations and for paperwork showing they really have them. Third - ask if they have Building Performance Institute or equivalent certified staff (installers and technicians). BPI certified staff and accredited contractors have taken additional training to know how to properly inspect and make energy improvement recommendations to your home. In addition if these contractors are participating in NYSERDA programs they will be audited by third party companies at the request of NYSERDA. Its a great way to insure your job will be done right. Finally you can download the Contractor Assessment form on this page and follow the instruction. It provides a way to score contractors so you can be sure you're getting the best value for the best price.
